A pre-operative clearance (also called a pre-surgical or medical clearance) is an evaluation that confirms you are healthy enough to safely undergo surgery and anesthesia. Surgeons and anesthesiologists request it to identify and manage any medical risks before the day of the procedure. It is commonly required before orthopedic, cardiac, abdominal, cosmetic, dental, ophthalmologic, and many outpatient surgeries.
Our pre-operative assessment typically includes: a focused history and physical examination, review of your current medications (including blood thinners and supplements that may need to be adjusted before surgery), assessment of chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart or lung disease, in-house EKG when cardiac clearance is needed, in-house lab work (blood counts, metabolic panels, coagulation studies) completed the same visit, and completion of your surgeon's clearance forms with our findings and recommendations.
